John Collins is the founder and artistic director of Elevator Repair Service Theater and is a former sound designer for The Wooster Group. Both of these widely respected New York experimental theater companies are known for their sophisticated use of sound design. In productions such as The Wooster Group's “To You, The Birdie" and Elevator Repair Service's “The Select (The Sun Also Rises)" sound plays a major role in setting the scene, telling the play's story and illuminating — sometimes completely redefining — the action onstage.

Collins will discuss his work with these two companies and their innovative, sometimes radically low-tech, approach to sound design for the theater. Topics will include the use of sound to redefine physical space, sound effects that are used to redefine and exaggerate physical action and music that is used to guide the emotional and psychological tenor of a scene.
