An artistic retreat in Helsinki was arranged at the studios owned by Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP). The studios are located on the historical fortress island of Suomenlinna in Helsinki. A Unesco World Heritage site, Suomenlinna is a unique combination of diverse cultural activities, maritime environment and layers of history spanning over 250 years. Yet it is only a 15-minute ferry ride from the heart of the city.
Curators of the retreat were Iva Kovač and Elvis Krstulović from Croatian group Fokus Grupa. The practice of Fokus Grupa is collaborative and interdisciplinary, and they work across art, design and curating. Their artistic strategies take political shape, without becoming a representational form of 'political art'.
Participating artists: Sala-Manca Group, Florian Roithmayr, Emilia Pöyhönen, Gilad Reich, Minna Henriksson, Oleksandr Burlaka, Jasmina Cibic.
Retreat was organized by Kiasma – Museum of Contemporary Art as a part of the project SharedSpace: Music Weather Politics 2013 - 2016 (see below) in cooperation with the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space. It was a 3rd artistic retreat within the international project. There will be a total of 4 retreats in Macedonia, Latvia, Finland andthe Czech Republic within the course of three years.
