In the 19th century, British polar expeditions staged theatre performances in extreme circumstances. Some recent site-specific performances have occupied equally testing environments; others have designed scenographies with active elements – wind, rain, snow. Mike Pearson considers the impacts of such climatic conditions upon performers and audiences, upon activities and their reception.
